Using the Pin Tool in Windows 7

1
Get Pinned in Windows 7

"Pinning" is a great way to add shortcuts to your most-often used programs in Windows 7. You can pin items to the Taskbar, at the bottom of the screen, or to the Start menu. That saves a lot of clicks and makes you more efficient.

Once you pin an item, you can also unpin it. In this step-by-step guide, I'll take you through the process of pinning and unpinning Windows 7's "Paint" program. Paint is a built-in image editor.

We'll start by pinning Paint to the Taskbar. The screenshot above shows the Taskbar with no items pinned to it.

2
Pin Program to Taskbar by Clicking

Click the Start button. Paint may appear in the list that pops up. If not, type "paint" in the search window at the bottom (it has a magnifying glass next to it.) It will then appear.

Next, rick-click on the Paint symbol, and then left-click "Pin to Taskbar" (outlined here in red). The program will be pinned to the Taskbar.

3
Pin Program to Taskbar by Dragging

You can pin the program to the Taskbar by dragging it, as well as by clicking. To do this, left-click on the icon, and while holding the mouse button down, drag it to the Taskbar. You will see a semi-transparent version of the icon, with the phrase "Pin to Taskbar". Simply release the mouse button, and the program will be pinned to the Taskbar.

4
Confirm that the Program has been Pinned

Check the Taskbar, and confirm that the new program has been added. You can see it here, at right next to the Start button.

5
Unpin the Program

To undo the pin, right-click on the icon in the Taskbar. In the menu that appears, left-click "Unpin this program from taskbar" (highlighted in red). The program will vanish from the Taskbar.

6
Pin a Program to the Start Menu

You can also pin programs to the Start menu, so that they'll appear when you click the Start button. In this case, we'll pin the Windows game Solitaire to the Start menu, to give quick access to it.

Follow the steps in Step #2 of this tutorial to find Solitaire. Once the icon for Solitaire appears, right-click it and then, from the menu that pops up, left-click "Pin to Start Menu" (outlined in red).

7
Confirm the Program

Finally, note that the program (Solitaire, in this case) has been pinned to the Start menu.

To remove the program from the Start menu, right-click the program. Then, from the pop-up menu, left-click "Unpin from Start Menu." The program will disappear from the Start menu.
