How To Install and Use 'Find my iPhone'

Find my iPhone
Apple's Find My iPhone lets you track your lost device and provides you with multiple options. Apple

If your iPhone or other Apple device, such as an iPad or laptop (or even a Mac desktop computer) are lost or stolen, Apple provides you with a very powerful set of tools for locating or disabling your device. "Find my iPhone" works via your iCloud login and service, or via the Find My iPhone app. Find my iPhone will show the past track, and current location of your Apple device on a map (if the device is turned on).

The location of your device will help you determine your course of action. For example, if you learn that your iPhone is at a friend's home where you forgot it, then you would simply retrieve it. But a location pattern that shows, for example, that your phone was stolen from a restaurant, would trigger a different set of actions. In the event of a stolen device, you may: 1. Display a message, 2. Track location, 3. Lock the iPhone, or 4. Remote-erase your iPhone. I don't recommend trying to personally get an iPhone back from a thief: People have been put in grave danger by that course of action.

It's great to be aware of the location of your Apple product and to have so many options for what to do next. Find my iPhone can even help when you misplace your phone in your own home. You can ask the software to make your iPhone sound a tone (even if you had the phone in silent / vibrate mode), making it easy to locate under a couch cushion, for example.
