Want to search your Facebook chat history? While your favorite social network does not have an official history feature, there are three ways to access logs from your chats with Facebook friends.

While some of these options will require a download to access your Facebook chat history in the future, others are available right from your account.

3 Ways to Check Facebook Chat History

1. Check the chat window

In Facebook Messenger, users can use the "Delete Conversation" link under "Settings" at the top of the chat window to delete that chat history with a contact.

However, users who do not utilize this feature leave their chat history behind. Here's how to view your prior conversations:

  • Open Facebook Messenger
  • Select the contact with whom you'd like to view the chat history
  • Use the scrollbar, on desktop, or your finger to scroll, on mobile, to view the history of your communication with that person

Note: Clearing internet files via your web browser may erase your Facebook chat history and you may not be able to use this method.

2. View all of your messages

By clicking "See All" on the bottom of Facebook Messenger — on desktop only — you can access your "Inbox." There you will have a variety of options to view and compose messages. The default setting is "Recent" — so on the right side you'll see a list of your recent messages.

If you pull down the menu under the "More ... " link on the top right, you will have options to view both "Filtered" messages as well as "Archived." Filtered messages are the equivalent of a spam folder in your email — messages are flagged by Facebook to prevent you from receiving unwanted messages.

You may want to scroll through this section from time to time to make sure that you don't miss a message from someone you want to hear from. Archived messages are messages saved by you — so for instance you may want to save a chat transcript but would like to move it out of the "Recent" section and be able to reference it later. Here's how:

  • Click into the message that you'd like to archive
  • Click on the "Settings" icon at the top right
  • Click "Archive"

To access Archived messages:

  • Click "More" at the top right of the page
  • Click on "Archived"
  • A list of archived messages will appear

3. Install a Facebook Chat History App

Finally, users can install a free Facebook Chat history application for their web browser. Firefox and Google Chrome users can install the Facebook Chat History Manager, which I think is the best free logger for this particular social network. Simply install the app, and your chats are now accessible outside your account with a click of a button.
