One of the most common functions Google Voice users should know is how to access contacts in order to place phone calls or chat via instant message. You can chat with your existing Google contacts, or even add new contacts

Chat with Your Google Contacts Using Google Voice on a Computer

Your Google Contacts can be accessed right from Google Voice. Google

To chat with your contacts using Google Voice on a computer, follow these simple steps:

  • Using a web browser, pull up Google Voice by visiting www.google.com/voice
  • Login with your Google username and password if you are prompted. (Note: You must have a Google account to use Google Voice. Click here to sign up for a new Google account if you don't already have one.)
  • On the left side of the page, locate the link that says "Google contacts." Click on it.
  • The resulting page will contain a list of your Google contacts. In order for you to be able to use Google Voice to chat with a contact, that person's phone number will need to be included in their Google profile.
  • Click on the name of the person you'd like to chat with. On the next page that comes up, scroll to the area that contains that person's phone number.
  • Scroll over your contact's phone number. Two grey icons will appear: one showing a telephone and the other showing a message bubble.
  • To initiate a phone call from Google voice, click on the phone icon.
  • To initiate an instant message session, click on the message icon.

How to Add New Contacts to Google on a Computer

Maybe you have some contacts who you would like to chat with using Google Voice, but who are not appearing in your Google contacts list. It's easy to add contacts one-by-one, or in a batch! Here's how:

To add a new contact to Google:

  • Pull up your Google Contacts.
  • Click on the red "New Contact" button at the top of the left menu. 
  • Add their name, phone number, email address, and any other information that you'd like to include about your contact into the fields provided. 
  • Your changes will be saved as they are entered.

What if you have a list of contacts that you'd like to add to Google so that you may chat with them using Google Voice? It's easy to import a list of contacts into Google.

How to import your contacts into Google:

  • Pull up your Google Contacts.
  • Pull down the "More" menu at the top of the page.
  • Select "Import" from the options
  • You will then be presented with a list of acceptable file types which can be used to import contacts into Google. For more information on file types and troubleshooting issues with contacts, visit this page.
  • Navigate to the file that you want to upload, select it and click the Import button. Follow the prompts.

That's it! Now your contacts are available in Google and you can use Google Voice to chat with them. To proceed, just follow the instructions on the previous page for how to chat with your contacts using Google Voice on a computer.

Using Google Voice to Chat with Your Contacts on Mobile

Google Voice can also be used on your mobile device to call and chat with your contacts.

Once you download the Google Voice app (click here to download the app for your iPhone or here for your Android), open it to get started.

When you use Google Voice on your mobile device, you'll have access to your contact list stored on your phone. Simply tap on the "contact" icon on the bottom of the screen to pull up your contacts and start chatting.
